In 2010, the German theatre Hamburg initiated a facade design competition for the construction of their new stage tower. The design of SPAR*K is a reminiscence to the dome of the significant historic front, the most dominant building of the ensemble. Large-sized anthracite facade panels made of concrete relief dominate the image of the monolithic cube, that is intersected by mirror-plated vertical inlays reflecting the urban environment. The emergent picture of an abstract theatre curtain unfolds its effect both during the day by the glare and reflections of the environment on its surface and at night as subtle indirect lighting installation of the illuminated mirror inlays. The facade is designed as a highly insulated and ventilated curtain wall with a closed character; openings such as windows are designed as perforations in the façade material.
