A new district, Riedberg, is being developed in the northwestern part of the city of Frankfurt. Besides attractive housing quarters with retail facilities, local square and restaurants, the district will become a new location for science and technology with the siting of natural science facilities of the Goethe university and the research institutes of Science City. Within this context, SPAR*K is designing on a site of 3.500 sqm the SUMMIT HALL, a climbing facility consisting of climbing hall, boulder hall and service building with wellness area, bar / restaurant, shop and back of house facilities. The specific challenge in this design is the fusion of the three different volumes into one. SPAR*K connects the distinct buildings with a wide strip of wooden lamella, which besides the use as constructive sun protection covers the industrial grade aluminium panels used on the facade and blends the building onto the yet to be built urban context.
A large, arche-like climbing block dominates the outdoor area, the restaurant is extended to a brad terrace which can also be used as a spectator podium. Parts of the climbing hall’s wall can be opened and this create a connection between indoor and outdoor climbing. For a sustainable and competitive future, the project will exceed the required regulations of energy consumption.
