The oldest historic building in the centre of Jena, the Stadtspeicher, has been extensively restored and possesses now a spectacular glass facade which is well renowned by the citizen of Jena. In the context of an art competition with the topic tolerance, the facade is becoming a display and work surface.
SPAR*K proposes an interactive light installation behind the glass facade. The text is a quotation of J.W. von Goethe, who is connected through his reformations at the university with the city of Jena.
Five columns are set up on the market square with large, green buttons. Being pushed, each button lights up a part of the text. Only through the collaboration of several people, the complete text can be illuminated and thus the meaning of the fragments becomes clear. The common action of a group strengthens the society.
Regional and national artists were invited to this two-phased competition, to constitute the topic in Jena as a temporary intervention at this special place. SPAR*K has been chosen as one of 5 contestants out of 117 to continue working on that topic.
