In collaboration with the fashion designer and artist Lucrecia Lovera from RETAPE, SPAR*K is looking into the field of life cycle and fugacity of man-made materials. Out of several kilometers of old VCR-tapes, they develop the sculpture MIXTAPE. The material as well as the media video is at the end of its cycle – outdated by new media is the misuse of the material the last step in a rapid development of an otherwise high-tech waste.
The spatial installation discusses the properties of the extremely sturdy, black plastic material and projects them onto the existing space. The beginning and the end of the cycle are connected in the piece: movies from the beginning of the media, such as Dziga Vertovs kino-Glaz, are projected on the laminar, woven surface – a loop is closed. The sculpture seems to grow out of the floor and moves levitating through space. A wide, continuous band is created with diverse techniques from the field of fabric production. The different transparencies and dynamic shapes give figure and space constantly new impressions.
