In the course of the horticultural show ‘Landesgartenschau 2018’, the competition searches for a concept for an innovative and sustainable new district of housing, business and recreation on the premises of the former Leighton Barracks in Würzburg. SPAR*K orient their concept closely to the Masterplan from 2010, simply switching the volumes to create more private gardens and park areas allocated to the buildings. The main focus lies on trend-setting and sustainable housing concepts: The largest part of the buildings can be disassembled and re-used after the cradle-to-cradle principle at the end of their use cycle. The most important feature is the ‘incubator shell’, a modular and active façade principle which serves as a biomass and energy production factory. The shell can be re-equipped with state of the art technology for energy production and provision if desired and necessary. In addition, the shell is also a protective shield as well as design element, which changes over the seasons due to its greenery.
